October is the dedicated month where we celebrate Black history. During this month, Key Stage 2 will be diving into key moments in British history and learning/celebrating the key role that the black community have played within it.

Reception and Key Stage 1 will explore the history of the Notting Hill carnival and will create headdresses which will be showcased during our own Mosaic Carnival assembly in the last week of term.

We will also be sharing quotes from prominent people throughout Black History with the children and discussing the impact and importance they have had. (Click link below to read quotes)

There will be lots of great videos and pictures added to our website so keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks.

Diversity at Mosaic

Mosaic Jewish Primary School is proud of its commitment to educating its pupils about the diverse world in which they live in. Our aim is to ensure that all children learn about different cultures, religions, events in history and people (to name a few) throughout their time at Mosaic, and not on key days each year.

As part of our commitment, we have developed our curriculum to ensure that our pupils are immersed in learning opportunities which enable children to understand the benefits of a diverse society that is celebrated and prepares them for life in modern Britain. An example of this can be found in the year 1 curriculum. Instead of just focusing on Florence Nightingale, our children look at nurses from around the world and the difference that they have made within their field and their global impact.

The benefits of this approach to our pupils includes:

  • Increased self-esteem from a feeling of belonging

  • Resilience from knowing who they and who others are

  • Preparation for life in modern Britain

  • Reduced potential for radicalisation

  • A whole-school approach with difference and diversity celebrated throughout our harmonious school

By raising awareness of all strands of diversity, how to eliminate discrimination and promote equality of opportunity, we are preparing our young people to become good global citizens and to appreciate the diverse society in which they live.
