The visit to Brighton and Hove

Article posted on Friday, March, 15th, 2013 at 11:09 am

This week we are thrilled to share with you a letter from Carolina Gopal, Head Teacher of the Brighton and Hove Bilingual Primary School, a free school which opened in September 2012, with whom we have strong Kate and Carolinaand constructive links. Kate Baum, Head Teacher Designate and Shirley Lee, Chair of Governors visited this school last week to give their staff a presentation on preparing for an Ofsted inspection. Kate and Shirley are well placed to talk on this topic as shortly before Kate joined SLJPS – in her previous headship – she attended an Ofsted training course for head teachers and Shirley is a former Ofsted inspector and trainer. Carolina was very generous with her time during the visit and Kate and Shirley benefited a great deal from the visit.

This week we also held our first Statutory Consultation open meeting. Thank you to those that joined us and we look forward to welcoming anyone who is interested in chatting to Kate Baum or the SLJPS directors at our next meeting on Tuesday 19th March at Southfield Library 7.30pm – 9.30pm. Please also take this opportunity to send your views about the school opening. These can be submitted via the consultation tab.

Please enjoy Carolina’s letter and a few pictures from the visit.

Dear Parents
You must be really thrilled about the School’s plans for opening next September.  I recall the excitement among our parents and supporters when we were given approval.
Our school gates opened in September 2012 with Reception and Year One and I am pleased to say that, nearly two terms into our first academic year, the children are well settled and learning at a spectacular rate in both Spanish and English.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication and loyalty of our parents. At times during the process it seemed like a distant dream for many parents, particularly as we were only able to announce our temporary site a few months before we opened. There are times when from your viewpoint that little or nothing appears to be happening. Please let me assure you that behind the scenes there is a great deal being put into place. During our preparations, we worked closely with Shirley Lee. She gave us so much valuable advice, help and support and I think that you are fortunate to have her expertise and experience, especially at this crucial stage.
I hope that I have the opportunity to meet you and perhaps be able to allay any concerns that you may have. You have a fantastic opportunity ahead of you and I feel sure that you will find out for yourselves before too long just how worthwhile the hard work and at times the waiting will be.
With best wishes,
Carolina Gopal
